File Extension Ifo

Currently there are three known file types associated with the .ifo file extension. Most common is the DVD (Digital Video Disc) data file which stores information about startup options, chapter divisions and titles, and audio locations. The .ifo does not contain the video data itself, so it is used in conjunction with a separate video file with either the .vro or .vob extension. These files can be accessed by any standard DVD player as long as they are intact and uncorrupted. It's also possible to open an .ifo file in a standard text editor, but since the data is in binary form it is displayed as a page of jumbled letters and characters.

Testimonials

Regtask was able to clean up my computer and speed up the performance! I highly recommend it

Jo H.

My computer was always popping up with registry errors and I couldnt get rid of them. Regtask did the job for me and took less then 5 minutes to speed up my computer.

Samantha J.

I have to admit I'm no computer geek. When something goes wrong, I usually have to call someone to fix it and it costs me a lot of money. When my computer started to experience random freezes, I just used Regtask and now it works normally again.

David G.

My computer is 5 years old and runs extremely slow now. I was a bit sceptical about using Regtask, but just decided to give it a shot in the end and it worked out fantastically for me.

When a DVD is created, both the .ifo file and a backup with the extension .bup are written to the disc. If the .ifo file is corrupted, the DVD player will look for the .bup file and use it instead. If both the .ifo and .bup files are corrupted the DVD will return an error message stating that no DVD has been loaded. There is no recovery from this type of error.

Because these files are simply header files used by the DVD player to find its way around the disc, they are not executable and pose no risk of damage to a computer or DVD player. It is possible however, for manufacturers to use the .ifo file as a means of limiting the amount of usage a DVD is allowed to have. This is attractive to companies that might want to offer a limited use disc that doesn't need to be returned upon expiration.

More Info Regarding File Extension Ifo

The second file type associated with the .ifo extension belongs to a program called ImageForge Pro. This program from Cursory Arts is a graphics creation, manipulation, and conversion package which assigns the .ifo extension to files containing object layer data. The format and structure of these files is proprietary and the data cannot be accessed by any external programs. Errors with these files are unknown but it is assumed that corrupted data would interfere with the graphic data to which it is connected. This may render the entire graphic file unusable or perhaps just the specific layers that are corrupt.

The third program associated with the .ifo extension is BioWare's Aurora Game Engine, the 3D successor to their 2D Infinity Engine. The BioWare .ifo file is not a standalone file, rather it is one of 18 total files that make up a complete game module. The .ifo (INFOrmation) contains the information about the contents of the entire module, similar to the table of contents and appendices of a book. All of BioWare's module files, including the .ifo, are written in the GFF format (Generic File Format). This format allows for easy editing or appending of module files without re-writing the entire module. It also allows backward compatibility for older versions of games, an attractive feature to game developers. Errors with BioWare's .ifo files are limited to corrupted data which would most likely render the entire module unusable. Corrupted .ifo files pose no threat of damage to game consoles or computer operating systems.

Finally, it should be noted that the .ifo extension is commonly used by many software products for files containing application information. These files are generally plain text and can be opened with a standard text editor. They will normally be found in the application's program directory although it's possible for them to be saved to the root directory instead. Though these information files may appear to serve no useful purpose, some applications require their presence to run. It is suggested that these files not be deleted without first testing whether or not they are necessary. This can be done by renaming the .ifo file and then attempting to run the application.
