| When a DVD is created, both the .ifo file and a backup with the extension .bup are written to the disc. If the .ifo file is corrupted, the DVD player will look for the .bup file and use it instead. If both the .ifo and .bup files are corrupted the DVD will return an error message stating that no DVD has been loaded. There is no recovery from this type of error.
Because these files are simply header files used by the DVD player to find its way around the disc, they are not executable and pose no risk of damage to a computer or DVD player. It is possible however, for manufacturers to use the .ifo file as a means of limiting the amount of usage a DVD is allowed to have. This is attractive to companies that might want to offer a limited use disc that doesn't need to be returned upon expiration.
